Watersports

Mui Ne is the definite water sports hub of Vietnam. It was put on the map when kitesurfer’s and windsurfer’s discovered the unique thermal winds that channel through the Mui Ne Bay sucked in by the dry hot sand dunes. Before long a strip of luxurious hotels had built up along the Mui Ne foreshore interspersed with local guesthouses, restaurants, shops and others looking to capture some of the almighty tourist dollar. Mui Ne has proved to be especially popular with Russian, European and Australian travelers. Several local natural sights have enabled Mui Ne to reach out to more than just wind junkies. Mui Ne today caters to a huge range of tourists chasing adrenaline rushes, authentic cultural experiences, unique natural sights or a few days soaking up the sun (we get more sunny days than anywhere else in Vietnam!).

We’ve put together some of our tips for visiting Mui Ne but if you want some truly personal advice from the locals please contact us and we’d be only too happy to help.

Getting There & Away

There are plenty of options when it comes to getting to and away from Mui Ne either from Saigon or heading North for further stops on your Vietnam adventure.

Our recommendations for traveling between Saigon and Mui Ne:

CAR to/from Mui Ne to Saigon – The most convenient is to hire a driver and a car. The recent improvements in the highway out of Saigon have reduced this trip to a pleasant 3-4 hour trip on a good day. The fastest route is this one. Please contact us to arrange a driver straight from your hotel or the airport.

BUS to/from Mui Ne to Saigon – There are several companies offering trips up and back from Mui Ne at regular intervals every day of the year. Tickets can be purchased at any of the travel agents in Saigon and Mui Ne or direct from the major companies including Futa and Sinh Tourist. Cost should be between $5-$8 depending on whether you take a sitting or sleeping bus. We recommend the sleeping bus for a bit more space on the 4-5 hour trip from Saigon to Mui Ne. We recommend Futa for sheer number of bus trips they run between Mui Ne and Ho Chi Minh City daily.

TRAIN to/from Mui Ne to Saigon – The train can be a slightly more comfortable option than the bus however limited trains actually stopping at Phan Thiet limit the options somewhat. Also you’ll have to keep in mind that you’ll disembark in Phan Thiet about a 30 minute (200k VND) taxi ride or longer but cheaper public bus trip from Mui Ne. The best place to buy train tickets is at Saigon or Phan Thiet train station’s respectively. Check the links to find the actual locations for each station.

MOTORBIKE to/from Mui Ne to Saigon – For the more adventurous or those wanting the more authentic Vietnamese experience the drive from Saigon to Mui Ne can be a great way to see some more of the countryside and experience the main method of personal Vietnamese travel. There are a few options on this trip but we can’t highly enough taking the coastal road. Google Maps will tell you that the trip will take 1 hour longer and this may be true but your sanity and life is worth a lot more than this.  Expect the trip to take a minimum of 6 hours but you’ll want to stop off for a few coffee breaks and perhaps a swim so allow the better part of a full day. As a guide you can use this map but we had to set it to walking to get take the ferry in Cat Lai (motorbikes aren’t allowed on the new bridge car’s use on this route). This method should only be used for those extremely comfortable with motorbike adventures, there are some long breaks between towns and you should expect to encounter some sort of difficulty on a trip of this distance in Vietnam.
